Okay, they're 20 weeks old! Starting to get a little impatient for my eggs! I have one rooster (at least) that has started a very sweet, unobtrusive crowing at the very civilized hour of 7:30am. We had named him "Likely" because the forum said he was likely a rooster, but now we're calling him "Definitely." Not sure how many others might be roosters (I know some of them are hens, you can just tell) - no one else is crowing, not sure if that's out of deference to Likely/Definitely?

The SO is sharpening his knife and talking about duck l'orange and roast chicken!
I think he's just joking though...although he is trying to put an ultimatum on them that they must lay by September or they get the axe!!! That should be plenty of time. Plus I would never, ever, let him do that.
I think I made a mistake by telling him that chickens could start laying as early as 16 weeks. Not sure where I saw that and what do I know, anyway? This is my first time!
I've got some nesting boxes with nesting pads and pine shavings, and I've put plastic eggs from Easter in each - even though I know they don't always lay where you want them to. They've got free choice oyster shell. Anything else you can think of that I might do to get the ladies started?
