A friend emailed me this info today and thought I would share. If you already knew about it sorry. Hope it helps someone!

Tick removal

Spring is here and the ticks will soon be showing their heads. Here is a good way to get them off you, your children, or your pets. Give it a try.
Please forward to anyone with children, outdoor pets or livestock, or anyone who even steps outside in summer!!
A School Nurse has written the info below -- good enough to share -- And it really works!!
I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's some times difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of dark hair, etc.

Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and swab it for a few seconds (15-20), the tick will come out on its own and be stuck to the cott
on ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it (and that was frequently), and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me.
Unless someone is allergic to soap, I can't see that this would be damaging in any way. I even had my doctor's wife call me for advice because she had one stuck to her back and she couldn't reach it with tweezers. She used this method and immediately called me back to say, "It worked!"

Thanks for the advice!

You are welcome! We have a lot here too. My mom actually got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick several years ago which caused partial kidney failure so I am really paranoid about ticks!

Lol, me too. I worked in the local hospital's infusion center, and there were alot of people who had to come in daily to treat lymes disease. After talking with them on a regular basis (until I left), I got really really paranoid about ticks

I have also heard that free range chickens get them a lot!

I've got to try that some time... Had a dog tick between my toes along side my big toe and dag nabit if it didn't itch for months on end.. Think it was 6 months till it stopped itching.

Sounds like a good time to remind everyone a Guineas favorite food is ticks.Every yard should have 4 to 5 guineas in it.

My GS has 10 guianas, which stay at my house with my chickens, which free range, but already I have pulled over a doz ticks from both dogs and DH.so not really looking forward to summer if they are already this bad, but maybe they will all drown in the rain we have had.
