Ticks!!!!

Personally, I blow lime dust all around the chicken coup, but lately, on this forum, I've been reading about 'sevin dust' and I still have no idea if they are both the same thing with a different name...

Sevin dust is a chemical bug killer that can be used on flowers, vegetable plants, trees or sprinkled near the foundation of your house or other buildings. It is not labeled for use on chickens but I and others use it to kill lice and mites on our chickens. I even sprinkle some between the inside and outside wall of my coop every spring. Yes it will kill ticks.

My chickens eat ticks....you need some Guineas is what you need

They will help your chickens eat the ticks.

I don't treat my chickens or guineas for ticks at all. And I only use DE in the henhouse and pen.

I can't advise about chickens but if YOU don't want ticks take fish oil. DH was always loaded with ticks........when we heard this we tried it.......it's good for heart health anyway......but it seems to work for ticks too. He hasn't had any ticks. I never did get them but I have taken fish oil daily for years.

Just take it easy when using Sevin on flowers and vegetables if you can. It is highly toxic to bees.

There is a replacement for Sevin, called Eight, but I haven't seen it many places and I don't know if it will work on ticks, lice or mites.

Maybe you need guineas.

Not to hijack the post, but I have Eight, but I was worried about it being toxic to bees as well. Do you know if this is the case?

As far as I know it is not toxic to bees. I suppose I should ask my club (Middlesex Beekeepers).

I'm glad you were able to find it. Most places around here do not have it. Still.

I heard 7 ate 9 and 10...

Seriously though....I had lots and LOTS of little deer ticks (the small ones)....I

I don't know if it was the chickens or something else.....but about the time I let them out, we went from having ticks all over us to not having seen one in over a month.

I hope it was the chickens....because I was going to try guineas....but this seems to have worked GREAT!!! (and they chickens have totally ignored the garden....big bonus.....I was worried that they would eat it up)
