Any other model rocket people here?

So far hobby to mid power rocketry. Waiting for the BATFE to comply with the latest court ruling and back off their requirement to hold a low explosive user's permit to posess H and higher power motors.

Once I can store the higher power motors, the REAL fun starts.

It's quite obvious that I'm no cinematographer, but these suckers are fast and they go quite high so it's difficult to follow the thing in the viewfinder.

Anyone else around Temecula into rockets? I've got a great launch site and would love to get together with a fellow "rocketeer" and blast a few off!

We're north of you, past Winchester, Hubby's a science teacher and he and our boys are just getting into some kits this summer (both sons want to work for NASA, and have the grades to get there). I built one in Chemestry in highschool, but it exploded about 50 ft up.

We call those type of flights a CATO (catastrophy)

How old are the kids? Mainly it's my son and I. He is 16 and does most of the building. I'm the money end of things, of course.

We all started with the black powder Estes or Quest kits. We still have many of those rockets and fly them often. Most of our flights now are mid power amonium perchlorate composite engines with a reloadable aluminum casing.

Once the BATFE complies with the court ruling we will probably start looking into certifications to allow us to fly more powerful engines. Right now we can go up to "G" engines but they have them commercially up to "M" with each letter designation having twice the power of the previous so an M engine is quite powerful and capable of lifting enourmous "model" rockets. Some of these things can fly to 40,000 feet on a commercially available motor(s). The G's that we fly have in the neighborhood of about 30 pounds of thrust give or take so an H would have 60, an I, 120 and so on.

Sorry.... rambling. It's a great hobby and not one that gets dropped like so many others. We've been doing it for years.​

The boys are 5 & 9, they grabbed the prefab kits from the hobby store in Hemet (Florida Ave, the name just isn't clicking though). Evan decided at 4 that he was going to build rockets and colony ships, and has been working on that daily.
