Have you ordered your birds yet? Will you have a rooster?

While Plymouth rocks are great chickens, you might want to check their next of kin, Dominques.

Rocks have single combs, Dominques have rose combs, single combs freeze during our winters and can cause some issues.

It is virtually impossible to get a single comb rooster through the winter. While it is not usually a huge issue on the girls, it can kill the boys.

Ask others on the surviving Mn their opinions. My favorite bird is the Speckled Sussex, but I have stopped raising them because of the comb issue.

When they are hurting from the frozen combs they don’t roost properly and we end up with frozen toes and feet.

Good luck and Welcome.
