Hi! I'm brand new to this website and I'm looking forward to learning and sharing my own knowledge. I do have a question of my own though… I have 2 hens since about 3 or 4 years ago and I'm thinking it's time for the stew pot. I feel really bad about this and hate to kill them when they are so happy and healthy. I know they are older than most meat chickens and I really got them for the eggs. I have the opportunity in our city to have up to 5 chickens now instead of 3 and I want to start fresh in the spring. This way my older hens won't have to endure a long, cold winter. Am I a horrible person for thinking this way? There is no way I can do this myself, but I also want it done as humanely as possible. I'm torn - any thoughts? Thank you!

As an alternative to the stew pot, if you are not up to "doing this deed" yourself, you could try selling them on CL or at auction, give them away, or just keep them. Chickens are actually quite tolerant of the cold so I don't think you have to worry so much about that. Ultimately it's up to you, but just wanted to to mention that there are other options as well if you are torn.
 
I don't want to give them away for fear they will end up in less than humane conditions and/or dead anyways. They are quite tolerant of the cold, I just thought if I was going to kill them, might as well be before winter sets in. I guess I'm just looking for someone to do the deed for me in the most humane way possible and then I have a friend who will make chicken stock and soup out of the remains. I'm such a wimp, lol!!!
 
Some folks let them live out their lives in a "retirement," coop as appreciation for all the eggs they have gotten or baby chicks.
