Time out of the Coop and Run

Hi Swag,

!

In my experience, it does not affect how much they lay.

What it does affect is where they lay - I find eggs scattered all over the place, every day is an Easter Eggs Hunt!

It also, in my opinion, improves the quality of the eggs. Free range eggs have more orange and richer tasting yolks.

No. I let my girls free range. I don't shut their pop door. I do have golf balls in the nest boxes so I don't have to go on any egg hunts.

Actually a study conducted by Mother Earth News showed that free range eggs are healthier for you too. They have more beta carotene, vitamin A, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids and less cholesterol and saturated fat.

My flock free ranges all day. I have yet to find an nest anywhere but in the coop. I do have one girl that's dropping eggs wherever she happens to be at the time, but she's weird. She's not making outside nests, the eggs just fall out.

I agree my birds free range. Some people use fake eggs in their nest boxes. A friend gave me a bag of golf balls so I use them. They seem to work ok. I have found an egg on the ground but that has been a very rare occurance.
