Really, it could be many, many types of bugs. The fact that they were on the eggs rather than the bird makes me think flies, not mites. And yes, some flies are teeny tiny. As jjthinkagain said, calm down.

Mites that live on birds do not live on mammals--we taste nasty to them. They may briefly "sample" a taste, but that will be about all. Clean out all the litter. In the future, make sure that all shavings are kiln dried--that will kill any bugs or their eggs. Get a long-term pesticide and thoroughly spray down the barn. Then replace with fresh litter. Bathe the chickens in flea/tick shampoo for dogs or cats, or dust with sevin or permethrin. Treat them with ivermectin pour-on.

Then go find a kids science book about bugs, that tells about why they are a necesary part of our environment. I would recommend The Magic School Bus series or the Let's Read and Find Out series, although offhand I don;t have a specific book in mind.

I would be freaked out too...
I also would NOT use DE to get rid of them..you'll want something stronger that really works fast...
use Poultry dust or sevins dust..something like that.. you can also use frontline spray...

This is the worst part its just a fenced in part of our BARN big two story barn with hay and straw... it has a dog in it, and 4 cows.

I bought the dust and i have help coming to try and dust and clean out the pen in the morning. I just can't do it by my self I wanted hubby to do it tonight but the neighborh who hauls fertilizer spread on all the fields you just can't breath outside right now Hoping it goes away over night..

I knoe people that have dusted their dogs with no sode effects, just dont breath it in. And all mites/lice will bite or suck, how else do they eat.
