Hello all! I am trying to get as much advice as possible in advance. My husband and I are going to build a hen house and pen. Any advice that you wish you had known prior to building??
Welcome to the BYC family.
Make sure you build it big enough to walk into.
No less than four square feet per bird.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Walk-in, TONS of ventilation (at least 1 sq ft per bird of permanently open ventilation), poop boards, 4 sq ft per bird, 1 linear foot of roost space per bird, build on high ground and divert water away from the coop, build in the shade if possible.

Let me also say, build it bigger than you think you need. Lots bigger. Nobody has ever said, "Gee, I wish I'd made my coop smaller."

And be able to stand up in your coop. Your back, and maybe your forehead and scalp will thank you.

Look at lots of coops. Read lots of articles and threads about coops.
