I recently received my second flock of chicks through the mail. I was pretty anxious when I did not receive them the next day as I had before(hatch date 5-20-13). Everything was ready for them so I was pretty excited to get them. I got a call 5-22-13 at 5:40 am. I work third shift so I rushed over there as soon as I got off at 6am. After peeking into the box at the post office I found one dead and the rest very noisy. I got them home and put them in their brooder. I was disappointed to find that one of my new chicks was acting strange. She had her head resting on her back and swaying it back and forth. When I held her she was able to hold her neck straight with assistance. I dunked her beak into the water as I got a vital pack with them thinking that maybe it was stress. I did lots of research and found that I may need Poly-Vi-Sol infant vitamins without iron. I bought them on the way home taking a chance that she may not have survived the night. I found her on her back barely breathing. I immediately gave her one drop of the vitamins and within 10 min or less she was holding her head straight and stumbling around less. she was able to stand and drink on her own but will not eat. I have pureed some of her medicated feed and her water together giving that to her by dropper. She even pecks at dropper but she doesn't eat much and isn't interested in the dry food at all. I keep her in a small box in the brooder. Every few hours I go and feed her what little bit she will take. Is there anything else I can do to get her to eat the normal food? She almost looks like a bantam chick next to the others as they are eating and drinking as they should. I put her in with the others for supervised visits so she won't have troubles having to be reintroduced. No one is picking on her but she is getting tossed around and trampled when the other chicks play.

Please keep her isolated from the others. It's better for her to remain alive than integrated with the others. It's exhausting for a weak chick to be stomped on, or pecked and pushed around. Sometimes other chicks will even kill a sick one. She can have 2 drops of the polyvisol (no iron) 3 times a day

Try feeding her finely mashed boiled egg yolk moistened with plain yoqurt. I don't think I'd give her the medicated feed for a day or so(if she improves) because it's probably too hard for her to eat and digest while she is feeling ill. She may like some oatmeal or even little pieces of grape or watermelon - something to get her eating and put liquids in her. If she will eat the grape, you can put her Polyvisol drops on that - it's safer than trying with an dropper.

A little bit of sugar in the water may encourage her to drink. You can put a stuffed toy in with her so she can cuddle. Do you have a heat lamp over her? Have it positioned so she can move away from it if she feels too hot. Peace(away from the others) and rest are best for her. Hatching can really wear them out for a couple of days, and shipping is just another setback for them.

I do have her under heat lamp and she can get away if she needs to. She drinks fine. I do have a small stuffed toy in there now. I noticed her peeping really loudly (hurts my ears) I picked her up and held her in my hands next to the others and she quieted down. I will have to run to the store for some plain yogurt since I don't have any. I had only been giving her one drop of the poly each morning because i didn't want to overdo it. I just let it bead on the end of the dropper and she drinks up the drop. would that be dry oatmeal or cooked? Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you. I did as instructed this morning with hard boiled egg yolk. She ate some and drank some water. I returned an hour later to find her on her side, very weak, and breathing is labored. I don't know what happened in that hour but something sure had. I spent an hour watching her and there was no improvement. I am not sure she bids going to make it. This is my first experience like this as all lived with my last flock and all were strong. I know i am doing everything i can for her.
