They look like springtails, tiny garden bugs that live on the surface of dirt eating decaying matter. They come in all shades of colors.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and help. These have all now dispersed, perhaps due to colder weather so it appears they where causing no harm.

Most insect hatches only last a few days......can appear alarming tho.

We have some bugs like that in the yard, they tend to congregate around damp areas like the compost and when we've left a chunk of scrap wood laying out they are all underneath when I go to pick it up. Kinda yucky, but they haven't damaged anything.

A bit of an update to the insects in garden saga. They’re back since more rain.

I’ve got a number of rain water butts around the garden and it appears our little friends are born from water as they’re a mass off them around the down pipe entrance and on top of the water.

They seem to jump as opposed to fly.
