I've used Ivermectin injectable for cattle and swine. 4cc's per gallon of H20 for 3 days. 10 days later do it again to kill anything that's hatched. If you still see dander, you could do it a 3rd time. I still eat the eggs there's no difference with the tast at all,and a few of my customers do too. I do tell everyone what's going on.. I've learned for my vet, the only thing it could do to me is make me immuned to a wormer if I ever got worms or such, and I'm really not worried about that. The mites can ONLY live on chickens, fowl, so when the Ivermectin gets into the bloodstream, all of their food has it and they all die. Eggs will be contaminated with it for 10 days after the last treatment. That's what's I've done 2x's and it's worked. If one has them..................................... they all will.

newbiechickenowner..where are you located?..how many chickens do you have..the reason I ask, there are several on here that sell DE..I got mine from the Feed store..they did't have it on display..I ask if they could order it and was told that they carry it...so you may want to ask your feed store..if you are anywhere close to me..So.Ky..I will give you some.

Hope this helps some. I ordered food grade DE that is mixed with wood ash from my local Agway. It's good in the run, in the coop and under the roosts. It can be put in their food and you can dust them with it. Also called fossil shell flour (Permaguard brand). I would make them a box to dust in; add some sand, dirt and a healthy dose of the food grade DE. They will manage the problem on their own.

Thank you for the posts....I couldn't open the first two links, but could open the PDF and the "this is gross" picture. It is funny because the bugs look like those pictured in the lice picture, but, the eggs do not look like the ones in that picture that go with the mites. The eggs are clumped on the feathers under the vent and actually looked like big chunks of white poop until closer inspection! It doesn't sound like there is a different treatment whether it is mites or lice?

I got the supplies yesterday (they did not have animal Sevin, but they had the same thing under a different brandf or actual animals). I didn't have time to do much yesterday so I just put a giant cat pan out there with some fresh sand and the powder in it and they pretty much were taking care of themselves via their dustbath! Today, the one that had GOBS and GOBS already didn't have any visible. I cleaned out entire rune and coop, powdered it all down, powdered all of them (that is a trip!) and refilled their coop with fresh everything and left the bath for them to continue to use with fresh powder in it. Does anyone hold the eggs? I chucked the ones today just because the thought was bugging me and I think that I will chuck the rest from today as well because there is still powder everywhere just from them bathing and the stuff sprinkled throughout to get into the cracks and wood, etc.

If you use food grade DE you could keep your eggs. Can you get it near you? My local Agway ordered some for me.

I believe in organic and natural too -- but sometimes using medication is appropriate. I learned this the hard way last summer, when I picked up five hens from an auction. Four of them never thrived, laid eggs, or anything. They had a terrible lice problem, too. I started with DE, went on with Sevin, more Sevin, yet more, tried some other things. NOTHING WORKED. One of them got very thin and she died. I rehomed the rest of them on a farm that takes in old unwanted hens and lets them live out their natural lives. So last year was a long learning process. I started out a staunch DE only person, graduated to sevin, and finally did my homework on the ivermectin. Which works.
