tips of chickens toes have hard black rounds on them

Just noticed last night that about 6 of my laying hens have round tips on their toes that are black. Any thoughts on this?

ok just read on other threads that this is just muck stuck on their feet. I sometimes spray, in small areas of their outside run, water to wash down their dropping and I think this is the problem. It is covered so not much rain gets in unless it is really blowing. I will have to stop doing this. now time to soak their feet to help get it off!!
