Hello. I am new to this site and I tried searching for advice on free ranging a large flock of hens (50 - 100) but I couldn't find anything except small backyard flocks. I will have a large coop on a trailer so I can move it from field to field. I have an unlimited amount of space (about 200 acres) to move them around. Should I use electric fencing? Will non electric work? The coop will be closed tight at night to prevent raccoons. Is it okay to have them near some trees? There are some hawks and an eagle in the area. I live in SE MI if the climate makes any difference . I would really appreciate any info.

Thanks!

I owuld say, if you are not going to alwasy have them where you can see them and get to them quickly, I would reccommend electric netting. Raccoons, as well as fox and coyote, aren't alwasy out just at duck/dawn, esp. if they know where there is a free meal. I have electric netting that I use for my meat birds from Premier One and am very happy with it. this will be my third year using it. http://www.premier1supplies.com/fencing.php?species_id=6

I use the same fencing on a solar charger and I love it. Worth its weight in gold. Very portable, easy to use, easy to set up.

Thanks so much for the advice! I've always had a stationary coop, but I wanted to try free ranging on the new property. Thank you for the link miss_thenorth. I will definitely put that electric netting/fence on my "To Get" list. Which brings me to my next question, do solar fence chargers work well? I don't think its feasible/safe to run extension cords out there (nor would my hubby approve).

I personally do not use one, since I run on 3 acres that is srurounded by lelctric horse fence, so I just tie it into that. However, I have read that people have used them and they are quite good. If you do search on here, or even post a ne topic, you will get reviews, either good or bad. But we have been dealing iwth premier for a few years now, and are very happy with all their products.
