I have a coturnix quail (Blueberry) currently living in a cozy little cot in the house this winter because I wasn’t able to successfully integrate her with the main flock before winter arrived. She was also born late in the season so never started laying by the time daylight hours shortened and the other hens all stopped laying.
I figured she would only start laying in spring but “SURPRISE” she laid her first egg yesterday and just laid her second today. It’s fairly dark in her room, she actually gets less natural light in there compared to the other quail out in the run who are not laying so I really don’t know what’s going on that would trigger her to lay.

It’s a nice surprise but I’m more interested in her overall health and my concern is that she’ll continue laying through winter, through spring, and into fall without a break which would put a strain on her body.

Any tips on how to get a quail to halt laying?

She needs to be getting less light. Not just natural light, any light. Quail normally need at least 14 hours of light per day to lay, but if you want to make sure she stops, you want to limit her light to 10 hours or less per day.
I don’t think she’s even getting 10 hours of light which is the strange part.
