This will be my first fall/winter coming up. What are some hacks for keeping the water available for a large number of birds? Birds will be inside the Steel covered barn. It is very cold where I live. Sometimes 10 below zero Fahrenheit.

Thanks ahead of time

Yes I realize I will have to use some type of heated waterer. I was more asking for specific types or products that people have had good luck with. There is electricity in the barn. Right now I use the Harris Farms 5gal. EZFIL.

Thanks

The cleanest and easiest in my opinion is to use 5 gallon buckets turned into horizontal nipple waterers coupled with stock tank heaters. The heater wont melt the bucket. What do you call a "large number"?

EDIT: Since you currently use 5g waterer, using 5g buckets with heaters should be fine.

Large number by my definition = 40 adult turkeys
Might be small number compared to some other folks.
I fill up 3 of the 5 gallon waterers about 1 a week.

I know of a metal pan that heats your waterer during the winter if you plug it in and set it underneath. Many companies sell this but I got mine from McMurray Hatchery.

This simple technique was taught to me online by a legendary poultry man from England. he said go to the store and buy some food grade glycerin .you can get it at Michaels Arts and Crafts in the baking section .when it gets cold ,put several drops of glycerin on the water .the glycerin will not freeze and it will leave a hole open enough from which the birds can drink. if they drink some of the glycerin ,it will not hurt them. so there you have it ,easy peasy.
Best,
Karen
