Hello from Middle TN. We had chickens growing up but this is my first time to own my own and it’s been decades! I wanted layers so I selected Barred Rock (friend’s recommendation) and Rhode Island Red (my mom’s favorite), 3 of each. They are 2 weeks old and developing wing feathers, but mostly fuzz still. Keeping them warm & cozy indoors. I’m in a rural area and most worried about predators. Any feedback on how to keep them safe once they go outside is appreciated!

Don’t have my run yet so I am open to suggestions. Just curious, why not chicken wire? I presume hardware cloth is similar to a tarp, drop cloth or canvas? Thank you.
Hardware cloth is stiff wire with a stupid name 🙂 Stronger than chicken wire.

Welcome to BYC. Chicken wire is useful to keep chickens in, but it won't keep predators out. Hardware cloth 16 or 19ga 1/2" is what you will need.

Don't leave any gaps bigger than a quarter. Put an 18" to 2' "apron" of hardware cloth completely around the run on the ground to keep diggers out too.

Hi @tndivegal :frow

I built this coop using hardware cloth that goes about 8 inches under ground and several inches out. There was evidence of animals trying dig into the run, but they failed.

This setup has worked for 8 years.
