To all of us kids who survived the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's & 70's

Yup. Had a base in my bedroom and one in the car. LOL
It was great. We would play games on those things for HOURS. Met lots of other people that way as well. There are some people here that still have em. Big ole whips on their cars/trucks. Base antennas up on top of the pine trees. And I live in a northern "city"

I am trying my hardest to raise my daughter the way I was raised.
She prefers being outside. And even though she LOVES clothes. She doesnt mind getting dirty either. Although I will tell her to put on some boots and jeans before she heads off. I just wish we didnt live where we do.

I know it is almost impossible to believe, but my kids school still paddles. YES, in 2009!!!! I don't worry about it because my kids behave...

My youngest is 19 and when I raised all of mine I told the principle that he had my permission to paddle all 3 of my kids under his watch because I felt that if he couldn't disipline my kids then he could have problems. Now don't get me wrong my kids were good for the most part and yes they had concequences if they were not. Schools have less control of the students because of the laws passed on to them.
Disipline & learning should start at home & sometimes it's sad to say that it's not. Okay off my soap box now

B. 1963-Rode bike without helmut, drank water from the hose, played daily in the AZ summer sun, remember standing on the front seat of my Dad's '66 Chevy stationwagon, played kickball in the street.....how did we ever survive?

P.S. DH b. 1961-he would take his rifle to go hunting, tell his mom the general direction he was going, and be gone for hours

remember when smoking was allowed in movie theaters? In MALLS?

Speaking of malls. My mom used to drop us off and leave us there for HOURS. And we would walk to the movies that were in the same area.

Or the beach? OMG When I finally was old enough to drive and had my own car I was the one driving us all to the beach. We would be there all day and until the sun went down. And the beach was not that close to us.

oh, '63 here.. and all the posts have me smiling in memories. Outside all the time- 25 cent saturday matinees- penny candy that really was a penny, oh, the banana seat bike! Mine was gold- it didn't look girly, so I loved it!

How about Halloween without having to xray your candy? Cap guns.. and being on the street with a whole box of caps and a hammer..

The ice cream truck. Paragoric.. and remember that coke syrup for tummyaches? We took aspirin, too, and had chicken pox and mumps. Doctors came to the house. Swimming in a lake without a lifeguard- without an adult around, even.
Respect for adults.. Always Mr and Mrs lastname

To me, one of the biggest changes- remember how you felt when someone said.. SHAME ON YOU?
When is the last time you heard that phrase?

Lilbizzy,

Shame on you!

for making me nostalgic

Playing cards in the spokes of your spider bike with the gold banana seat.

10 cent ice cream bars.

64 here. I think we should actually bring this phrase back - I was just thinking this recently. But I fear we are too far gone for shame . . .

anyway, MY banana-seat bike was bright purple and I rode it everywhere. I walked ALL THE WAY to and from school - never got a ride. Had a key to let myself in (Mom worked). Even though I was a bookworm and watched TV I was still outside most of the time - there was an awesome field behind our apartment where we'd fly kites endlessly, and feed the neighbors' horses through the fence from the grass growing in the field.

And my mom spanked me! Not often, but when I frankly deserved it (and I knew it at the time too). But she trusted me to make good judgements, and because of that I wanted to prove her right. Hope I did.
Sigh.
