I just gave this information to a new member but it urks me that most older members fail to give this information to people when asked about things they should know.....
New chicks should NOT be handled by children because.....They can possibly have Salmonella! The Center For Disease Control clearly states this. I am studying to be a nurse and this kind of thing is no joke. Even reputed hatcheries can have issues! A reputed hatchery in Ohio just had an outbreak of disease, so they are not all perfect.
Please start informing people. Young children do not have strong enough immune systems to handle Salmonella.
Please wash your hands very thoroughly after handling anything that your chickens come into contact with, even after they are grown.
