To assist or not?

Hey guys,

This is definitely not my first time hatching in an incubator, but I've not had a hatch like this!

I have some appleyard and aylesbury eggs now on day 30, and yesterday I assisted one which had been internally pipped for 48 hours and not externally pipped. It was making noise for quite a while and I made it a small air hole after 24 hours. Once it got to 48 hours it seemed to be become very exhausted, all of the blood vessels had appeared to have dried up so I thought it was safe to help it out. It turned out it wasn't, as the yolk sac was very much still attached and very large. It lived for about 18 hours before it sadly passed away. :(

My problem is, I have another little duckling in the incubator which externally pipped the wrong end about 48 hours ago, and i am very concerned that a similar thing is going to happen with this one. It is still active, and it still has some blood vessels to absorb. But I'm unsure at what point do I attempt to help it if I need to? I'm worried it's going to die of exhaustion eventually, and I'm going to be unsure exactly what to do to help the poor thing.

It is so hard to tell someone what to do without being right there. First if it is pipped at the wrong end strike 1. If it has been 48 hours strike 2. Now it is a toss up of what to do. It is so difficult to make that final decision. Usually they are out of the shell in 24 hours and you are 12 after that. I think if it was me I would check it carefully and see what is happening inside. Then you are going to have to make a decision on what to do. But it is 50..50 at this point. With the pip in the wrong end I think I would open it carefully just a bit at a time until you have a idea what is happening. I usually start at the pip and crack the egg the rest of the way around and then see what it does. If nothing after a hour or so gradually try to open it up noting if there is any bleeding. Once you get it open before you totally separate the shell try to see if the yolk is absorbed if not leave everything in tack place it back inside the bator and observe the process. Hopefully things are OK to get it out that's all you can do. Your the Doc now. Good Luck and let me know.

Thank you for your reply!

I was going to have a look to see what the yolk sac was like, but as soon as I took it out of the incubator it started zipping! I'm hoping it will be okay, and that nothing is still attached to it :)
