To clean or not clean pooped on eggs?

Is it recommended to clean off pooped on eggs or leave them as is before incubating?

I am about to incubate some eggs I had mailed and one has a lot of poop on it.

What should I do?

Clean it or leave it?

If you clean it, what do you suggest as the bloom is on there?

How much is a lot? Can you post a picture?

I've washed eggs to hatch, but only lightly to maybe moderately soiled ones at worst. If it's really nasty, I wouldn't even put it in the incubator, personally.

I went to go take a picture; I updated the original post.

I have a few with specks of poo, but never like this one, though it may not be too bad and I'm just overly worried.

Oof, yeah, that does look like a lot... That's the sort of egg I'd either wash to cook or toss back to the birds if it was from my own flock. Since they're purchased hatching eggs, though, you could always try to gently wash it off and then maybe set it a little further away from the other eggs if you have room in your incubator to space them out. It all comes down to your comfort level. I'd keep a close eye on it for signs of spoilage if you do set it. Good luck!

Yeah, I have enough space to move it away from the others. I can try that but was wondering if I should try to wash it or figure out what are the hatch rates if it is washed.

I only have 6 of the Fleur D'Unccle bantams, so with a 50% hatch rate, I was hoping to get at least 3 hatchings, more if lucky.

Because you’re hatching….. use a wooden scraper and go easy.

Personally wouldn’t put that in my ‘bater to further grow whatever is on it for three weeks.

If the eggs was precious, I'd scrape it off with a piece of wood or fingernail. Then, maybe wipe with a paper towel moistented with a drop of hydrogen peroxide. Otherwise, I'd fret the whole time that chicken pop was being incubated sown there.
I ended up scraping it off with my nail, but it was caked on so I used some warm water on that side of the egg only. I am setting it away from the others and will candle it and see how it is in a few days, then check again at day 14 or so.

I don't know that it would last 3 weeks without be incubated.

Hi! I’m no expert but i thought i would speak from a hatch i had. It looked worse then yours. I completely covered it wiping with a baby wipe. The hatch went no different, it went great.

I think you’d be okay wiping it, or at least some of it so it doesn’t touch the others.

Yeah it should be fine. Best of luck on your hatch for the eggs!

Often eggs are okay when wiped, however, people do warnings against washing eggs before incubation due to the possibility of problems. Since you scraped and gently wiped, i don’t think this would be a issue.
