I was told by select people that it is a bad idea to raise chickens with turkeys. I realize that chickens can carry a lot of diseases. But my question would be is it safe? I'm tempted to go ahead and try it, I was told the diseases would kill the turkeys!!!!

Chickens could kill turkeys not necessarily will. It's always a possibility especially with blackhead. However, I know a lot of people who free range the two with no issues.

Thanks for the responces

Been doing it for over 30 years and never had any issues. I think there are many other ways for a chicken to die than by a turkey although I suppose it is possible. In a free range environment my turkeys go off in their own group but sleep together. Blackhead is pretty rare anymore.

Seems to be dependant on location. If Blackhead is a problem where you live don't do it. If there's no Blackhead should work out OK. I raise both & haven't had a problem with it.

It wouldn't be free range, about a 1/4 acre of ground and a feeder building and a roost building, I do wish I had more property.

My turkeys do just fine with the chickens. My hen roosts with the chicken flock, but my gobbler prefers to roost outside by himself. He waits in the run just outside the coop door for me to let everyone out. My turkey hen is currently sitting on some of her own eggs and some of my Cochin eggs (she was hatched with a chicken chicks too). Here's a picture of my tom and hen, if you look real close you can see the little chicky chick hanging with them :D
