To fence or to run free?

I'm kinda on the fence here - after reading posts here I had planned to make big runs for the daytime - but have talked to a number of people in the area who let theirs free range all day - even when they aren't home, and we have coons etc in the area, one said that they only lost one in 8 years and another said he's lost a few over the years (but he is really out in the country and has cougars that show up fairly often) so I'm thinking in a run if I'm not out there with them, in the coop at night, (I have about 3 acres about 12 miles from town) we do get wildlife but the population of coons and possums is really down right now due to a coyote pack that was in the area for a few years, but the ranchers have dealt with them now and I expect that we'll get some incoming, although I still have only seen a few deer since the coyotes went and before they came there were many deer so I may take a while for the void to fill - hoping to pick the brain of a person down the road that had chickens. Slightly concerned about hawks but we're kinda wooded on a hill and I usually only see them down the road in more open areas. Does anyone know if Crows or Ravens are big enough to take a full grown chicken? We do get some of those.

Crows and ravens won't be a problem for full grown chickens.
