to get the rooster or not to get the rooster that is the question folks

If you get a good rooster that isn't human aggressive, then adding one to your flock would be no additional work at all. Personally, I don't know if I'd add more than one: they say 8-10 hens per roo. Some roos do fine with other roos and somewhat less hens per roo, but that will depend upon the individual roo. Since you've never had one before, I'd stick with one and see how it works out. Maybe add more down the road when you have more, younger birds and a better handle on the nature/behavior of roos.

No, you don't need to keep roos separate from the rest of the flock. Ours are all perfectly happy together....happier than being separate anyway. If you're collecting eggs for consumption, collect every day and whether or not an egg is fertile won't matter one bit.

Another option for you may be to just get some fertile eggs from one of your friends and let your broody hen try and hatch them out. Makes her happy, you get new chicks and the hen does all the work. Of course, you'll still have the issue of what to do with the male chicks, (which is why your friends are trying to get rid of their extra roosters).

If you decide to go the rooster route, I wouldn't take more than one. They can be a pain when they fight it out for dominance. I just culled one for that reason.
