We were always told if you can pick them up the the side, that's fine, but try not to from above since that's how a hawk would grab them and that they instictually know that
I have a flock that came from the feed store where they were in with a lot of other chicks for a couple of days before coming home with me and a flock that I got shipped from a hatchery the day they hatched. The flock that I got at 2-3 days old were more skittish about being picked up than the ones I got at less than 24 hrs old. I think maybe part of it was the 2-3 day chicks had been hanging out with other chicks for those days (and not really people except when the hand came in to grab some) whereas the shipped day old chicks were so happy to get out of that box and be fed that they became immediately attached to me. All of them are friendly chickens, they all come to me and have nice personalities. The ones from the farm are a little more self-sufficient whereas the hatchery chicks still prefer to be with me at all times. They still stand on my feet if I hold still for too long. They try to fly up on my back if I bend over. They follow me around when I am cleaning the coop instead of wanting to be outside playing. Sometimes their love can be smothering. LOL!!!! But they are all good girls in their own way.
