So I have 2 hens and 1 rooster. I had 3 hens about a month ago but a skunk got in and killed one of them. My rooster over-mates one of the hens and she is scared of him and so is my other hen. He rarely lets them go down into the run and he never lets them outside of the coop otherwise he will mount them and they both hate it so they know better then to leave the coop. They've stopped laying eggs for about a month now and I've considered taking him out for about a week to see if they start laying again. I've been considering buying chicks but by the time they are big enough to be outside it will be wintertime so I've decided to wait until the springtime to get them, but I didn't know if he just needed more hens, if so I'll be getting starter pullets asap. I won't be butchering him or getting rid of him and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? The hens are a few months shy of 2 years old and the rooster is about 1 year.

He needs more hens for sure, i dont think that separating would do any good other than to tick him off.
He is an extremely nice and friendly rooster. He's never attacked me once even when I pick up the hens and they freak out. :) Do you think he'll leave the other ones alone for the most part if I get more?

His attention will most likely be diverted among the other hens so they will not be bothered as much

Thx! They're all Buff Orpingtons. Guess this solves the problem on whether I'll be getting more!

I love my Buff Orp! Iv'e found that about 3-4 hens to a roo is a good ratio. Good Luck!
Thx! Wanting to get lavenders or jubilees but I might just have to stick with buffs for now.
