I see some painted inside, some not. I was thinking of painting just so that I can make it fun and funky inside my coop. Okay, and keep it cleaner and less smelly.

I just wonder how that works with scraping poop off of things....does it help, or are you scraping the paint off?

I did because I used exterior paint and I can see if there are any little bugga buggas and I can take a scrub brush and clean it easier than just regualr wood. Also it just looks better.

If you were to do a lot of scraping on a painted surface, yes you would start damaging the paint, but that is not something you'd normally do. Having the floor and walls painted makes it much easier to get poo off, because it does not weld itself to a painted surface (esp. if semigloss or gloss) as it does to raw plywood.

Personally I think it is better to paint -- and there is no reason not to get funky with it if you want, LOL -- although it is not like the world will end if you don't paint.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

I painted because it does make for easier clean up. I just got some exterior grade enamel paint from HD's oopsie bin. At only $5 a gallon it's been a good investment.

Okay, I've decided I'm gonna paint the interior of the new coop as well as the exterior.

That's because I was a dork and bought INTERIOR latex "oops" paint from Lowe's the first two cans I picked up.

That's this weekend. Then I'll paint as much of the exterior as I can with the one gallon of EXTERIOR oops paint I picked up today. (Helps to read the WHOLE label, y'know?)

At first I thought I'd paint just the exterior so I could move the chickens into it as soon as the (exterior) paint dried. Then I would have moved the run fence back around the new coop construction and let the chickens start to use the coop. After a while, I would just lock them up in it so they learn it's the new coop for them, so I can use the old coop for the babies which need to come outside really soon.

But then I discovered I had two cans of interior paint. Non-returnable, because they are Oops! paint. Might as well paint the inside for all the reasons stated by previous posters.

Someday I'll actually get this new coop finished....

I wouldn't worry about it that much. I have one wall in my coop painted with interior paint and it's fine. Probably not as durable as the exterior painted ones, but it hasn't peeled up yet and has survived two long/cold winters. I say go ahead and use what you have and get those babies moved.

Most important - enjoy the process!
