To paint or not to paint

Building my coop now. Got a great deal on some shipping containers. I'd like to paint the inside but not sure what is safe to use. I'm not getting the chickens until Spring so it will have plenty of time for fumes to disparate. Any suggestions?

The fumes will be gone in a day or two at the most, but it's really best to NOT paint at all when it's too cool.

There shoud be a preferred temperature range on the can, usually above 60*

By shipping container, I assume you mean one of these:


Ventilation is going to be a much bigger problem than with wooden structures. For a surfacing, you want to make sure it will bond well to metal. Most household/barn paints rely on the absorbtive quality of wood. You might have to consider a paint intended for automotive surfaces.

The shipping crate I purchased is wooden. I will have to add ventilation and everything else but it saved me a ton on lumber especially with the cost of plywood. I was able to get two of them cheaply so I can also build a grow out coop too.

I prefer oil based paints myself, but either should work
