Today is the day we get the materials for the duck run. My biggest worry is the fill. I have been reading what most people have done, most are not an option ($).
We will be putting the hardware cloth on the flooring as most predators here are ground dwellers or diggers (snakes, mice, coyotes, badgers, ground squirrels, cats, etc).
I was thinking using just dirt. I have a huge pile of it by the burn pit and would strain it to make sure there is no old nails, sharp rocks. Etc. Half the 18' run will have a fiberglass roof for weather protection. Top will have the hardware wire in addition. Hawks, owls, etc. are very much present.. That will be the section with the 25 Sq foot housing unit.
My dad loved collecting items others were throwing out, so one of the bath tubs he collected will be their above ground pond, so I can use their wonderfully dirty water on the flowers each morning.
Will the dirt be sufficient for their flooring? Of course in the winter I will have hay bales to protect their feet. Soggy mud is not a problem in the high desert. Will dry out before the day is over.
