So many people just can't keep up with the Shepherd need for exercise. It is a shame.
My oldest nephew (Booger Butt) said, “ if you do get another dog, at least get a real one this time!” I assured him I’d get a German Shepherd.

He’s great with other dogs, and okay with cats. I’m thinking the flock would be a “never fully trust” situation.
If you do want him tell them, even if you just think you want him. Also if you explain your loss they are likely to hold him. That is actually another argument for not getting another dog. I never had to leash Sturgis, or worry about him with the flock. When I got my first chicks, I immediately let Sturgis sniff one in my hand. That way, even if I didn’t move the chick away fast enough, I wasn’t attached to it yet. He wagged his tail, and sat down. I put the chick on the floor, and he just watched it. I put it back in the brooder, and he got on his hind legs to see in. I left a stool in there so he could sit on it, and watch the babies. Otherwise, he’d complain to Dave and me.
Have you guys ever heard of “Petfinder?” I started looking for a German Shepherd a few years ago, and occasionally get emails from them. This is the first time they have shown me a German Shepherd in all this time. It really seems ironic. However, I just can’t. He will be long gone before I am able to handle a strange dog.
