Toe injury

Ok, toe got stuck in the door. *sigh* There was some bleeding, which has stopped and been treated with Blu Kote. My biggest concern is the flap of skin hanging off the side of the toe- what is best to wrap it with? Will just a bandaid work and then paint that as well so the others don't pick at it? I have her separated at this point. 6 weeks old.

Thanks,
Tikki, thinking there is too much excitement today since they escaped this morning out of the brooder in the house.......

Anybody? She got the flap of skin off. She wasn't wanting to put a lot of weight on that foot for a while. Once she started acting normal again, we put her back outside with the rest and one of them propmtly started picking at that toe and now I have more skin flapping off.

I am still searching, but what do I wrap it with? Can I do a small strip of gauze under the tape and then use baby oil to get it off? And when should I take it off and change the wrapping? It does not look like keeping it open is going to work. Am I better off just keeping her separated?

Thanks.

Do you have any Blue-kote? it is great for healing and also disguising wounds. you can get it at TSC or most feed stores, The others will be drawn to red so with blue-kote they tend to leave it alone. but if you use it make sure you are wearing gloves and old clothes because what ever it lands on when you spray will be purple.

Ok so i've kinda had sumthin like this happen, she ripped off her toe nail. what i did was i covered the injured toe in babypowder (to stop bleeding, and to make a small protective cover),

then you could use gause, and use medical or ducket tape to keep it on, once you've done this you can put her back in with the rest but keep a close eye on her, to make sure shes not bein

picked on. If she is remover her and keep her seperate for a couple of days, then try again. it should heel in a week or so. change her bandages daily, to help with the healing you can also

put neosporn on it everytime you change it. hope this helps and i hope she gets better ASAP!!!!

First post- yes, blu kote on after we stopped the bleeding.

I know the others should have not noticed, but apparently the one went right for it.

We've used the blue kote before with success on other chicken parts. (the blue is from gentian violet, which is an anit-fungal, which, {as a former breastfeeding couselor} we suggest for treating thrush for mama and baby..... but I digress, lol)

My biggest question is how to wrap- at this point we have her separated, and I'm thinking maybe neosporin under gauze under tape and then more blu kote. I don't know how they won't *not* pick at it if it's wrapped.....

Hope your chicken's toe is doing better. I just read your post so this is a bit late, but when my chicken ripped her nail off, we goobered the wound up with Neosporin, wrapped it with gauze and then wrapped the whole works up with black vet wrap. She didn't mind it at all, the vet wrap stayed on great and no one bothered it. It was also very easy to remove and rewrap with new stuff. You can get vet wrap at Farm and Fleet or Tractor Supply for less than $2.00. Good luck.

Will definitely have to go and get some of that. We tried the gauze and neosporin/blu kote combo and we didn't have much luck getting the one toe wrapped. Granted, we didn't try real hard.

If it had been bad enough to warrant a must wrap, we would have covered her head to help her be calm and gotten it done, of course.

Since it's nighttime, the rest are inside now and she is in the puppy pile of 8 of them in the corner. No one has been picking at her again, so we'll monitor and then separate her out overnight if we need to. I have errands tomorrow and will get to TSC since I'm pretty sure they are open on Sundays. That's another item I need to have stocked, because the medical tape was something I didn't want to have to soak with baby oil to remove, etc. I was more worried about the sticking and peeling off of skin from the tape because we have the ability to separte until healed. But I agree, the vet tape is a must get.
