Hello everybody out there in internet world!
So I have a little problem. one of my rooster's toe nails is ripped off. I just introduced my larger younger flock to my 4 older chickens and i think one of the old ones is the culprit of this crime. it seems to me that the toe nail is completely ripped off. i cleaned it off with some peroxide and wrapped it with gauze and some tape. i didn't put any cream on it because i wasn't sure what i should use. anyway, i was wondering what i should do about it in the long run. right now he is resting peacefully out in the heated garage. also, i was wondering if the nail will grow back or if it will just scab over. i can put pics up if you want me to so you can get a better look. and how long do you think it would heal ... has this happened to anyone else

My Brahma rooster did the same thing, he some how ripped it completely off, it bled for a long time, after I got the bleeding stopped I used betadine to clean it out real good then sprayed bluekote on it and it healed fine no problems, Don't use peroxide more than initial cleaning, then use something like blue kote you can use neosporin but the dirt will stick to it and if your roo is like mine the bandage won't stay long.. plus it needs air to heal.

okay thanks for the advice. i only covered it for tonight so that it will stop bleeding because it was bleeding a lot when i found him.

Had this happen a few times.
1: I had a d'Uccle hen pop a tail nail off just after I put her in a show coop at a show. She bled like crazy. Being Mottled, all the white parts of her showed the blood terribly. I cleaned the toe and sprayed with no-pick(off brand bluekote). Took awhile to grow back to normal, but now I don't remember which toe is was and can't tell.

2: A roo popped his off fighting through a fence. I didn't do a thing once it stopped bleeding, except check about once a day to make sure it did not infect. It healed fine as well and soon enough you couldn't tell which toe it was.

Those are the 2 that I remember off the top of me head.

Our RIR Feisty had her nail ripped off, and as mentioned above, I couldn't tell you which one it was today. We used bandaid, first aid tape, and neosporin.

well my rooster is doing just fine now. i used some neosporine and it is almost completely healed but i will still keep an eye on it.

if this happens again of its starts to bleed, put cornstarch on the bleeding area. we use cornstarch as a blood stopper all the time. Very useful

Soak their feet in warm Epsom Salts twice a day for 10-15 minutes. Put Neosporin on wound area, and leave uncovered so it can air dry. Do this till wound area is completely healed.

I want to bump this thread because I have 2 week old chicks and one of them had poop stuck to his toe nail, When I took it off I think I tore his nail off too. My question is will It regrow even if got completely ripped out?

Hi @Mach 1 Padilla
I guess a lot would depend on how far back the toenail was ripped off. It probably will, but it would be good if you would post some photos so we can see it.
