So I have 6 6 week old chicks. I read everything I could find about raising chicks. I ran out and got everything for my first aid kit. So tonight when holding one of my chicks I see a couple spots of blood on me and see it was coming from her toenail. It was I think just tore a little. So I run to my kit bring out my blue spray stuff got a little carried away. As in both my hands and feet are now blue and all of one of her feet is also then I let her go and all 5 other chicks took after her pecking at her blue foot. I thought the point of the blue was so they wouldn’t see blood and peck her? She was even pecking herself. Now what? Thanks for any help.

I would clean it (soap, water, then alcohol) and apply some Vaseline or antibiotic ointment (use one that doesn't said "Cain") to stop the bleeding. Styptic powder can also stop the bleeding. I would then wrap it with something to keep it clean while it heals. They must notice the difference and are curious about the blue spray . Mine fortunately don't do that. I treated one of my roos with bumble toe about a month ago and they never picked at his wound dressing. They don't even pick at each other's leg tags. When I would dress his toe I would place antibiotic ointment on a piece of cotton ball and place that on the site. Then I would use plain old paper tape to wrap it securely. It would last until he was due for his next cleaning which would be the next day.

Add a pack of q-tips and a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide to your first aid kit.
Dab the peroxide in periodic intervals the next few days and your chick should be fine. Keep the bedding fresh as well.
