Toes bitten off

Welcome to BYC. Do you have any disinfectant to clean the toes, such as betadine, chlorhexidene, or Vetericyn? Plain neospirin ointment can be applied after disinfection. Are they bleeding? If so corn starch or flour can help to stop bleeding with some pressure to the site as well.

Do you know what caused the bites—rats or another animal? Cold it be frostbite? Do you have pictures? If rats or a predator is suspected, be sure to secure your coop or get the others to a safe pen or bring inside. Half inch hardware cloth is pretty rat proof.

You will be the best judge of if you think the skin can heal around the exposed bone. If it can, this is the best case scenario and you need to keep the wound clean and covered until it can. It is important that bone does not dry out. If bone starts to appear brown it is indicative that the bone is dying.

I would wash wounds with soap and water. Apply Neosporin without the pain reliever as can be harmful. Wrap with gauze and vet wrap keeping toes separate. Then call your vet for an appointment.

He and some others were free ranging and a bobcat tried to get him. I heard the commotion and quickly ran outside and stopped the bobcat. No more freeranging.
