Toes Fused Together On Newly Hatched Chick.

Understood about the taping. It seems to be doing ok for now...The toes are spread apart, and the bleeding has stopped. The middle toes are fat and curled under still. I will attempt a device once it's healed.

I've been reading the Marans thread mentioned earlier. Man, it's 300 pages long! I haven't ran across any posts concerning the toes yet, but I am falling more in love with the breed.

Just so you know...you've done the right thing. It may take a couple of days for swelling to go down and the "bend" in the toe to straighten a bit. Keep the baby warm and I would make sure it is drinking. I hope this goes well for you and the little chick. Keep us posted.

Now, I've got to go check out the thread you guys are talking about. You realize...this probably will mean there are "Marans" in my future...don't tell my family!

Thank you for the kind words. I intend on keeping the little guy in the bator for a few days, I'll just back the temps down gradually. When it gets all well, in with it's siblings it goes!

I'll also be getting more Marans...this little set back isn't going to get me down. I'll just have that one as a pet, and egg layer (if it's a hen) and not breed it.

Good idea...
You know what...you might want to pick an easy going baby from your larger group and give your "pet" chick a friend in a couple of days...IF - it will leave your chicks feet alone. I guess my thought is that if he'd would have a friend...he/she may eat better and incorporation into the larger group may also be easier. Just a thought though...keep us posted.
