My Bourbon Red tom (jake?) is about 7 or 8 months old now. Lately I have noticed when I go to feed him and the female that he puffs up and makes a strange noise, sort of like a "thrump". I look to see if he's stamping his foot, but it sounds vocal. What is it and is he getting 'territorial' on me?

Thanks!

They fill their chests with air and create that rumbling noise, usually following a spitting sound. Mine display to me all the time. It's not aggressive usually, just a look at me sort of thing. Aggressive birds usually aren't displaying when they attack, they stand more erect and come towards you making a trilling noise.

The sound you are refering to is know as ''drumming'' and is used to attract hens. I don't think you need to worry about aggression, though it's always a good idea to keep an eye on young male animals until they prove themselves trust worthy.

Thanks so much! This is my first foray into turkeys (I have chickens & ducks) and really appreciate the information!
