tomatoes vs laying

My chickens eat tomatoes all the time. Some we give them. The rest they harvest from the volunteer tomato plants that grow seemingly everywhere. We get plenty of eggs.

I can't imagine that tomatoes affect production at all. (In moderation, as with all things.)

Thank you for your replies. I hadn't heard this before but it came from someone who got it from a feed seminar from one of the feed companies. Maybe they heard wrong or it was just wrong information. Just thought I'd run it by ya'll !

sounds rediculous. tomatoes cause the runs in rabbits but have never seen a problem with chickens... here in israel, cucumbers and tomatoes are staples in the diet i.e.e they are made in to a small chopped up salad twice a day at least and most of the old timers that keep the 'baladi' chickens (the arab mediterrenean mix yard chicken) have always given all food leftovers to the chickens. ours get all the israeli tomatoe and cucumber salad that is leftover from the hotel restaraunt and where hubby works. they also get all the cooked rice, red bell peppers, and any leftover spicey food from our food that the dogs dont get...
the same for rice both cooked and raw: in thailand the chickens get anything left over from peoples plates including raw shellfish, fermented stuff, any kind of rice, all the tropical fruits taht have fallen from trees, and they all lay... survival of the fittest for these chickens.

BUT, i do build up to these additons. u cant just throw in tons of veggies one day and then a week no veggies and then again put a lot in. this will cause problems with the digestive systems of any animal from horse to goat to human to chicken. better to mete out the leftovers every day so that they get a small amount all the time... now i am introducing veggies to the babies so that when they go to the faraway coop, they are already able to handle veggies and scraps.

I gave my girls tomatoes from my garden all the time last summer and had no such problems. My girls LOVE tomatoes!

I have to agree with the rest, mine get tomatoes and LOVE them, have not noticed and drop in egg pro. I have heard that apple seeds will decrease production,

Yum! I want to eat at your house! :p

el al flight to tel aviv, route 1 to jerusalem, turn off at the exit before, drive through apple orchards, olive plantations and vineyards, i live upstairs, the house with all the wierd containers with thai veggies planted in them and two lhasa apso, and presently, 22 baby thai fighting chickens living in my living room/spare bedroom.

the other spare room is in good shape, but my house is definately not lady's home journal material by any means (and compare to most houses here either. people here are clean freaks to the point of obsession. like, being able to eat off the floor)
