TOMATOES

My favorites are the big, lumpy beefsteak sorts, with Pineapple being a particularly-fondly-remembered variety from my childhood.

Tomatoes in general are a little challenging to grow in my soil -- acid sand -- and in the hot, humid climate here in central NC.

I can never resist trying to grow a bowlfull of rainbow-colored cherry tomatoes. A variety I got in a seed-saving exchange, Sara's Galapagos, is a red, grape-type that grows better than most.

Last year, of all things, the White Wonder's outdid anything else.

I anticipate that the addition of generous amounts of chicken compost will greatly-improve my tomatoes.

Florida folks, I need your tips on growing tomatoes once I move.

What part of FL??? 10-12" Raised beds work well along the I-4 corridor. mix of garden soil and dillo dirt. Up where I am, you are going to have to excavate clays, ensure you have a way for excess water to escape the excatavtion (or it will "bathtub" and drown roots), top with a raised bed, then fill.*

*I think. That's the current plan anyways. Didn't work last year, I had only excavated 9", for a total of maybe 16-18" of improved soil.

East Central Florida. It's fine sand, poorly draining, former citrus orchard. I think raised beds or swales will be a must.

I grew up in the Daytona area, had family in Cocoa for years. I know the area. Soil drains better than you might expect, but it's pretty poor. Raised beds will work.

Calling all tomato lovers! What are your favorite tomato varieties to eat? Why? What climate do you grow them in? Please share! I’m always looking for new varieties to grow! ❤️❤️❤️

Glacier tomato. It is a small early tomato that produces all season. It was bred for those areas that have shorter seasons- so, further north than where I am located. Large enough to slice and lay on a sandwich (would need 3-4 slices to cover a sandwich). A friend of ours loved them - thought they had excellent tomato flavor.
