Toms vs. dog

I guess I know what to do, but dang! After we butchered the older toms, the 6-7 month old 2 Bourbon Red & 1 Harvest Gold Toms had to challenge dang near everything on the place for pecking order. I convinced them that my kids were NOT to be challenged (all they did was "stomp" at my son ONCE and I went all Tom on them and solved that) and they have gone back into "they are our flock and we have to protect them" mode. The guineas are the bosses of EVERY bird here, period.

The whole flock of turkeys follow my three year old everywhere, which is part of the problem. The dogs, who they have never tolerated well, seem to have become something to be intimidated and driven away. Of course the dogs want to be with us, especially when the BIGBADMEANTURKEYS are after them

It's gotten to the point where 3 of the 4 dogs will just run away whenever the turkeys get near them. But, one 11 year old dog has decided not to back down or run if they have him cornered. He's now going after them when they corner him and has made himself their prime target. They chase the other dogs, but positively hunt this one out. I don't blame him for defending himself, but I also won't put up with him going after them...as of this morning, he's currently inside with the two 12 year old dogs and my youngest, largest dog is outside on guard alone.

So I now have *3* dogs in the house and the turkeys are the schoolyard bullies. I guess either the turkeys or the dogs are going to have to be penned up. It's going to end up being the turkeys, because dogs being locked up will mean the turkeys get eaten by the coyotes who are bold enough to come in the yard!

Getting rid of the turkeys is a LAST resort. I love these big, silly birds! My poor dogs shouldn't have to live in fear though...I tell them this is Kharmic retribution for killing birds (before they learned better) and terrorizing the barn cats!

How big are these dogs?

My lab has taken to refereeing the turkeys when they start to get a little rough with each other, and won't let them come in the garage where the dog food is. She barks and nips at them, but has never ever harmed one because she is complete control of herself. I was really worried about it the first couple of times she did it, afraid she was going to hurt one, but she has shown incredible restraint.

I wonder what would happen if you let the bullied dog "go after" them a couple of times while you are there to supervise. Maybe he will just show them who is boss and let it go.

My other three dogs are Great Pyrs, so there is never any question of them ever getting bullied by anything.

I don't know if your toddler is on his own, but I wouldn't leave the 3-year-old unattended with the turkeys, no matter how nice they are --- just because I've heard of them pecking at eyes, and a child that age could be hurt. Other than that it sounds like someone will have to be penned up. Sorry they can't all live more harmoniously together.

The dog is only about 40 lbs. He *really* wants to kill them, not just defend himself

He is a reformed chicken killer, so I know he doesn't hurt them, because he KNOWS IT IS NOT ALLOWED, but when they bully him, the equation changes. We've been keeping him inside the last few days. If he's out, he does what he needs or goes to his dog house. He can still go with us out on the 4 wheelers & tractor, but just laying around in the yard is a no-go...

I don't leave my three year old alone with the turkeys, but he plays where I'm working and they lovelovelove him apparently. I don't know what they are thinking, but they do seem super protective of him.

wonder if you could muzzle the 11 yr old dog and let him have at 'em any other way he could. Maybe he could get them to see the light, without seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, LOL.

I've noticed that turkeys are very curious about things that are the same size/height as themselves. Mine will gang up and chase the cat or rabbits that come around.

I think it's the tom that's the most worrisome with a small child because they tend to hump anything they can ... including the leg of my friend who was visiting once... gross!! My tom would never have hurt an adult, but once a guy was sitting/working at ground level next to the fence and Mr. tom turkey came over and tried to hop on top of him. The guy claimed he was being attacked, but I knew it was just the surprise of turkey love.
