I have a pair of wood ducks in a large pen with a pair of call ducks. I have a next box for the wood ducks, and I check it every so often in the box for eggs. It seems that she has been in the next box because she has made a nice little "hollow" in the straw, but no eggs yet. Is it too late in the season to hope for anything this year? The male wood duck is fully into his moult, but she hasn't started yet.

I could be wrong, but if she has gone in and made a nest ,sounds like to me she is getting ready to start laying...

I've read threads on here where people say they've had hens lay and hatch clutches in the winter and the babies survive!

I've had eggs and hatches in the winter. Some ducks will stop laying but most of mine will lay every so often. It's far from being too late though.
