Too many eggs?

Hi!

I have a four-month-old Buff bantam Cochin chick who started laying recently. She loves her "sister" who appears to be an ISA Brown(??) and copies everything she does, which apparently includes egg-laying.

Jenny is the bantam Cochin, Dorothy is the ISA Brown(??).

Dorothy started laying on the tenth and has laid an egg a day since then.

Jenny started laying on the eleventh and has laid an egg a day since then.

Is nine eggs in a row too many?

I don’t think so?. My silkies started laying recently and they’ve been laying an egg everyday for more than two weeks. My husband is surprised because they’re not supposed to be “layers” lol

It is a lot for a Cochin but not for an ISA Brown.
Her lay rate is NOT due to her trying to emulate the other bird.
Desire doesn't cause ovulation. Good nutrition, health and lighting does.

Thanks! I was a bit concerned. Should she be taking a break?

I guess she does have a wider variety of foods than my big girls did at this age. And it is very hot where I live so they get plenty of warmth and light!

How do you propose to slow her production?

My only concern would be if you were adding artificial light to the coop. If it is natural light when the season turns they will slow down production naturally. Otherwise enjoy it . Artificial light is the only way I know how to (force/trick) them into production.

Enjoy it. They will only lay that well their first autumn. Next year, they'll molt and take a break.
When they resume, the cochin won't lay at nearly the same rate.

Each bird will lay as much/as little as they do. Not really anything you can control. Some birds are very consistent and productive. Others, even in their prime, just never lay consistently or very well.

Thanks for all your replies! I do not use artificial lighting except in the dead of winter as a heat lamp. And I probably won’t do that this year since all my girls have feathers now.
