My chickens are eating very little feed, and today I had 2 softshell eggs. I do have the oyster shell out, and feed layer feed, but they are hardly touching it, they are eating so many grasshoppers. would that cause the soft shells?

I will have them penned up for three days, so I hope that makes them eat the layer feed, and get some better shells, I hate those gross soft shells, but the dog loves em! Mrs.K

Here's my experience. We are overrun right now in grasshoppers and crickets. It seems the drier it gets the more there are.
My adult flock forages from early morning until they put themselves to bed. Their eggshells are fine, good and strong. Haven't seen but two soft-shelled eggs and that was a year ago or more. *knock on wood* cuz I hate them too.
