I have a wood floor coop which is 5' x 20' and I have put in about 8 bails of white wood shavings. I live on a single family home lot which does not have that much room for discarded used shavings and they are starting to pile up. Is there any way to make them decompose faster. The shavings that are discarded are on my septic drain field and they are about a year old and still no evidence that they are disintegrating or breaking down. They look as good as new practically. I live in Washington State so it does rain much of the year and they are exposed to the rain but even that doesn't seem to have made them break down.

Does anyone have this problem or any suggestions what to do with the excessive amount of shavings mixed with bird droppings. It would be too messy to haul them off to the dump and I don't have a pickup to put them in anyway. Is there something I can mix into the shavings?

Grass clippings will help, as long as herbicides aren't in the mix. Also, anyone with a garden will love the stuff, and it works fine as mulch. Mary

Yeah, I would bet that if you got a bin just for that and advertised on Nextdoor or Craigslist that you had wood shavings w/chicken poop in them... you'd get some takers.
