Will chickens eat too much oyster shell or do they generally know when they've had enough? My pullets started laying so I put out an extra feeder and put about 2 quarts of oyster shell out. They absolutely devoured it in minutes. I figured that much would last a little bit.

If it was two pullets, 2 quarts would be too much, for 40 pullets it is good.
How many mature female birds do you have?
Are you also feeding layer feed and if so how long have they been eating it?
Pullets near POL, by necessity, tend to pack on some calcium in their medullary bones as commencement of laying is near.

My chickens tend to eat in spurts...not sure why... :idunno

So, as long as they had feed in their feeder.... I would keep putting oyster shell in a separate feeder to the side..

And I wouldn't worry
