I don't know the answers, but find the topic fascinating.
It's an odd coincidence that just this morning I came across this study of salt toxicity and chickens from 1926. I had fun reading it. I have no idea if the information is accurate.

oh, I am only suplementing my feed at this point. I added BOSS for the winter, a little quinoa, and some other grains. No salt. I was just wondering why I had heard that it was so bad for them. What does the salt do for them? Is it like electrolites?

Your feed formula is actually what prompted me to begin researching mixing my own feed!

You are welcome! I have to say that I always view my chickens as little visiting jungle chickens that should be eating what Nature gives, and that influences what I like to feed.

Thanks Imp! Great article! it is definately an interesting read especially how salt directly into the crop produced symptoms similar to poisoning...
