We're brand new to chickens, but really feel like our favorite "girl" may be a roo. He/she is 5 weeks old. Is it too soon to tell? We're not sure about his/her breed.

Thanks! The other three don't have combs nearly as large, which makes me think that "she" is.

We've also witnessed her silently crowing (??), Fluffing up her chest feathers, bumping chests a lot more than the others, and it seems that she always wants to be perched higher up than the others.

Anyone else want to weigh in? :)

It's a cockerel, but no idea of the breed. Chest bumping is not necessarily a sign of a male. My girls do it as much as the boys. In fact, I was just watching one of my 9 week old Mille Fleur D'Anver pullets challenge my 6 week old Delawegger cockerel...and win.

Looks like a little Wyandotte Roo.

"surprise Roos" always seem to be the "favorite hen", Roos tend to be very outgoing and friendly when they're young.

Most certainly a cockerel. Definitely not a Wyandotte, Wyandottes have rose combs and yellow legs. I'd say it's a hatchery D'Anver with a single comb, maybe?
