Took Dog to Vet - UPDATE PAGE 3 GRAPHIC PIC

I had the same issue. I called around for a horse vet to come look at my pony mare to give her a physical, that is all. The vet all the farmers recommended wanted $51 call out, plus $145 an HOUR JUST for the physical, nothing more. I called the vet my cat goes to, who is also a horse vet, and he wants $100 for the whole thing and that includes 2 major shots.

Yeah, he might not bill, but you can guess who I said sure come out to!

My vet that our family used for over 20 years charged me $3,000 to remove my dogs tail becuase of a tumor. Then the dog had to be put to sleep within a week because the cancer spread. In the mail I received a sympanthy card and a bill for $100 for her to be uthenized. After I didn't pay the bill for 3 months he called wondering why I didn't pay. Needless to say he got ear full from me and I started using a different vet. Oh he did decide to write the charges off.

I buy all of my dogs/cats shots at the feed store (except for the Rabies) and do them myself. I keep injectible antibiotics on hand. I take them for emergencies only.... I still have paid out over $1000 this year for vet bills. 7 dogs 2 cats... you expect some vet bills.
I do wish they had an affordable health insurance for pets though.

We just got through paying $1016. for dentals for a chi and a lhassa. The bill was detailed and every detail was a charge.... 1.5 pages full.

. I used to love this vet hospital and have been going there for 15 years but this is ridiculous and now I'll be shopping around. My girls are getting on and I have every intention of getting a GSD pup so I'm hoping that this method of charging will not be standard for all vets.

I took my lab to be euthanized Jan. last, actually she died before the needle penetrated

and that cost over a $100. The vet gave the injection anyhow

I quess to collect the $$$ ???

Dental care for pets is only necessary when you feed them corn, soy, wheat and other things your pet did not evolve to eat. It is a total rip off.

Hmmm, I haven't heard of that. Anyone have that happen?

It's like having someone tell you you have to go to the doctor every time a tick lands on you. "If you don't get the head out blah blah blah..."

While an infection CAN happen, with our family, living in the woods...having an irish Setter...we removed hundreds of ticks over the years from people and dogs. No infections. My mom would have had to sell 2 of us to pay for the doctor and shoot the dog to avoid vet bills if a professional was needed each time.

Makes me feel better. Sorry for your pocketbook.

Vets in my area can charge what they want, it is a license to print money. They all charge about the same fees so what are you going to do?
To hell with being a Doctor, become a Vet.
They charged my friend $1200 to amputate three of his dogs toes and for him to have his finger tip amputated cost $240

That was covered by BC Medical but the Doctor showed him what the BC Government was paying him for the surgery. Ridiculous.

Most Elderly people or those on fixed incomes can't and don't take their pets to the Vet, they can't afford it.
Horse Vets charge even more. They charged my friend who's horse had accident, (no fault of hers) $600. That was for a 15 minute consultation, euthanasia recommended, walked the horse back on the trailer and gave her a lethal injection.

the more I think about this the angrier i get. Not just because of the price, but the last couple of times I took the dog to the vet i got lectured on the importance of heartworm medication. I would love to be able to protect my dogs from heart worm, but honestly, have you priced that stuff.. for 8 dogs.. one of which is a great dane. I like to pay my house payment too. Most of my dogs are rescued and i feel like I provide them a good home. don't lecture me or try to guilt me into buying medicine I can't afford for them and don't tell me I shouldn't take them in if I can't afford to buy heartworm medicine.

Wow, I feel better now!

Tell me about it. My vet was closed on the day my pup was sick with parvo(the vet is nearby). She died right when we took her inside the office, in one of the isolation rooms, of the ER vet, and they charged me $100!!! what! My dad was outraged. Of course we paid, but thats insane!
One check up from the regualar vet is $45 here! Too much!. It was like $25 like 5 years ago. Its utter insanity!

I picked Charlie up this afternoon and they ONLY charged me $215! Am I supposed to feel like I got a bargain now? I guess the squeaky wheel does get some grease every once in awhile!

Poor dog - he has a drain in there and they said it'll take quite some time to heal.

And here is the grub that I paid $215 for! Next time I'll know what I'm looking for!
