Top 5 best egg layers GO!

I would suggest leghorns or a smaller breed then, they do best in the heat, they have good production, and they are flighty. My leghorns have flown up onto the house when being chased by a dog before. Predators can still kill flighty birds though, I have seen them fly out of some situations but I have also found them mangled and dead on the edge of the woods.

Egyptian fayoumis and Golden campines are also a recommended breed, they are flighty and very good free rangers, very alert birds. They do awesome in the heat and they should be able to handle 30* if they have some sort of shelter to hide in. They are also very pretty and fast to mature, the egg production is not as high as the White leghorns and other production breeds though.

She knows not to expect eggs this season. She was reaching out through Facebook and our friend who we didn’t even think of had contacted her so she can get a few adult birds and she is is serious about me hatching for her for some silly reason and so I will probably be given some eggs from her as well. Which is alright. They will more than likely be barnyard mix chickens. Still glad I posted though because I will be much more of a chicken snob when picking for future flocks and I definitely like the idea of dual purpose birds and sustainability.

Biosecurity! Getting 'random source' birds or even hatching eggs can bring in devastating diseases. Read up on this issue, before getting involved. And, if you hatch eggs, MANY cockerels will appear, and they don't lay eggs. Have a plan for them. Like your freezer, when they are big enough.
In your climate, Leghorns and other Warm weather birds make sense. Big single combs, and smooth feathering!
Look at feathersite, and Henderson's breed chart, and the Livestock Conservancy, for ideas.
