Topic of the Week - Nest boxes

Pics
Inside or outside diameter, both reasonable for a chicken nest.
Wonders if you lose eggs inside the hollow of the tire, or do you pack that full of bedding?
I fill it with pine shavings and they are outside in the run, as an extra place for laying.
They are placed on bricks to be up from the ground water, and they survived a winter here, it isn't your winter, but they where waterproofed and they use them with no problems.

My nest boxes are just plywood with straw as bedding (as is their coop & run). I use ceramic eggs to entice them to lay in the boxes and to discourage egg eating. I keep supplies on top of the boxes to keep them from roosting or pooping on them.

*left box is the only one used

Since chickens prefer to roost/sleep at the highest point they can reach, I'm sure to have the highest perch in the coop (opposed to the run) and well above the nest boxes.

They sleep at the very top above the windows.

Here are a couple of my girls for good measure. :D

I'm not even going to build next boxes in this coop. I'll add some crates or whatever and call it good. I think hens adjust to what is available when they are young and develop a preference for that. They like the familiar as they get older. And since time and cost are an issue for me right now, I'll use what I have on hand that is fit to the task. The hens won't know the difference.
