We just moved the babies out into the tractor and when dh moved it one of them got a leg run over by the bottom 2x4 board. She's walking on it funny. When I held her it sticks up in the air while the other stays pulled in. She's back in with the others now, they weren't pecking her or anything. The joint looked like it was swelling. She hops around, drags it a bit behind her but gets it into normal position when she lays down on it. What do you think we did to the leg? Will it heal? Should I have taped it up? We've only had them about 2 to 3weeks or so and I think she's about 4-5 weeks old, by t he feathering out she has. I didn't get any pictures of it but I'll try to in the morning when I go check on them.

The same thing happened to one of my Jersey Giant chicks. The group was about 5 weeks old and we moved the tractor late one day and didn't see the bottom board creeping up on one of the chicks' foot. By the time we saw it was stuck, we'd already set the unit down. The foot got really swollen and he hopped around for a week or so, then we put him down because it wasn't getting any better. We are raising them for meat, not pets, so I did not see the value in continuing to feed one that would not heal. I was worried about infection, too, since it spent a lot of that week just lying around. Probably not the happy story of healing you were hoping for, but maybe someone else figured a way to splint an injury for a more pet-type chicken.

Thanks. Sorry about yours. We hadnt set it down on the leg yet, but it may make no difference. These girls will be our layers... I haven't advanced to the point of calling them pets just yet :) She'll need to be able to get on the roost I think. I went to check on her this morning, after thinking about her all night. She's looking pretty good. Still hopping, but she wasn't peeping loudly, getting around ok, and I spotted her eating and preening her feathers. Unfortunately I forgot pictures, when I got there half of a jersey giant was pulled through the wire. It only got the head and a bunch of feathers. The girls seem ok, a bit spooked maybe, hiding in a corner but they were happy to see us and acted fine by the time we left. No one got into the nesting area, or on a roost. They piled up in the corner. Goofs. Well them and us, because we tried teaching them about roosting today! I think they are getting the hang of it. They had one here, odd. I added hardware cloth to the bottom 2 feet. They should be safe tonight, I hope. Last night they weren't happy in there towards dusk, lots of unhappy peeping going on. They were dust bathing and looking happy tonight, even little miss injured.
